Oregon education Technology standards

The OETS - Oregon Education Technology Standards include
CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION
COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION
RESEARCH AND INFORM FLUENCY
CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING
DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS

The the 3 I am focusing on are
Creativity and innovation, Communication and Collaboration and Digital Citizenship. I am reordering them

1. Communication and Collaboration
There are so many programs that are suitable to students of all ages, that enable communication and collaboration. There are blogs, email, podcast and texting that can be used in the classroom. This is the main purpose of technology and many students already know how to use it. We can create surveys, talk with people thousands of miles away or down the street. Students can continue to do the same assignments, such as book reports, just deliver it in a different format. Like on a blog, where parents, family, classmates and teachers can see it.  Communication is very important to me, it allows students and me, to see parts of the world we might never get the chance to visit. Or parts of our town we have never seen before. This is great because in Salem-Keizer school district field trips are hard to fund.

2. Creating and innovating
The whole reason we have technology in the classroom is so students can create. Achieving Bloom's higher level of thinking makes the learning process their own. They can put ideas into a graph, chart, presentation, models and publish it. Many of the tools I stated above can be personalized or avenues for publishing. I watched on one of the Web2.0 youtube videos that a students paper could be read by just the teacher or it could be read, watched or listened to by 2,000 people.

3. Digital Citizenship
When I allow my students to use online programs and resources for their own projects I will teach them about digital citizenship. It is important to know the copyright laws and to be sure to give credit when its do. There is also a safety and ethic aspect to technology. We need to be sure that were aren't offending or attacking anyone. Once we publish our ideas it is out there for everyone to read. Its important too, that students get a pop-up page offering them 100,000 dollars that its probably not real, and we shouldnt give out any personal information.

I have added this video, It is fairly long and a lot of the ideas have been heard before. However some of it is new. I also felt weird posting on my blog with out some sort of media. Thanks!

  1. There are several adaptions to this video. Indeed a very powerful presentation. Not all good statistics, of course, but nevertheless reality.

    Thanks for sharing.
