Oregon education Technology standards

The OETS - Oregon Education Technology Standards include
CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION
COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION
RESEARCH AND INFORM FLUENCY
CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING
DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS

The the 3 I am focusing on are
Creativity and innovation, Communication and Collaboration and Digital Citizenship. I am reordering them

1. Communication and Collaboration
There are so many programs that are suitable to students of all ages, that enable communication and collaboration. There are blogs, email, podcast and texting that can be used in the classroom. This is the main purpose of technology and many students already know how to use it. We can create surveys, talk with people thousands of miles away or down the street. Students can continue to do the same assignments, such as book reports, just deliver it in a different format. Like on a blog, where parents, family, classmates and teachers can see it.  Communication is very important to me, it allows students and me, to see parts of the world we might never get the chance to visit. Or parts of our town we have never seen before. This is great because in Salem-Keizer school district field trips are hard to fund.

2. Creating and innovating
The whole reason we have technology in the classroom is so students can create. Achieving Bloom's higher level of thinking makes the learning process their own. They can put ideas into a graph, chart, presentation, models and publish it. Many of the tools I stated above can be personalized or avenues for publishing. I watched on one of the Web2.0 youtube videos that a students paper could be read by just the teacher or it could be read, watched or listened to by 2,000 people.

3. Digital Citizenship
When I allow my students to use online programs and resources for their own projects I will teach them about digital citizenship. It is important to know the copyright laws and to be sure to give credit when its do. There is also a safety and ethic aspect to technology. We need to be sure that were aren't offending or attacking anyone. Once we publish our ideas it is out there for everyone to read. Its important too, that students get a pop-up page offering them 100,000 dollars that its probably not real, and we shouldnt give out any personal information.

I have added this video, It is fairly long and a lot of the ideas have been heard before. However some of it is new. I also felt weird posting on my blog with out some sort of media. Thanks!

Analyzing student data in spreadsheet

I used google spreadsheet to find the lowest performing students. I was able to chart their progress on the test. I found, from my graphs, that Katherine Hepburn had the highest growth from test 6 to test 10. Google spreadsheet is very similar to Microsoft Excel, which made it easy to navigate. I was able to use the equation button to find the average of each test and the averages for each student. The Charts and graph are located in the Insert tab, there are many choices available for you to chose from depending on the information you are trying to present.

I have linked my spreadsheet here. If you would like to see how I came up with my averages and the below average student growth rate.

Google Forms

My group for google docs explored FORMS. We created out survey and sent it out to Cohort A. The survey was on Salem and people's favorite places to go. It was really easy to set up the survey and as we got our feedback we could see it adjusted in the graphs. The live feed is great!

The results of our survey are here

Our group made a google doc explaining the FORMS application a little more in depth here

THIS IS OUR SURVEY

I made this presentation using SCREENR

This is my presentation on how to use Google doc From application. Screener is really easy to set up, I was able to open an account through my google account. After hitting the record button, I increased the recording box to include the whole screen, pressed record and I got a count to 3 to start my presentation. It recorded my screen as well as my voice.  Very, very simple. This presentation I made shows how to make a survey using Google Forms application.

This Screenr can be used in class to model where to find resources, using class blog, and even using word. If students are stuck or have questions they can replay or pause the video. They can use to read books online and record themselves reading, they can then turn it in to the teacher. It can also give students the opportunity to create something new which is hitting the higher level of Bloom's taxonomy.

My favorite Web2.0 tool

TeamViewer is a great piece of software that allows you to share your computer screen with someone else. This is remote free program that enables file sharing and computer to computer connection. It is completely safe and only people with your computer ID can access your computer. This would be a great way to incorporate a guest speaker, they can take over your computer and do a presentation from miles and miles away.

Please use the link to see TeamViewer video.

OTEN Reflections

The embedded podcast is not working so please click on the image.
In the Podcast I talk about the OTEN conference that I attended.  At the conference I got to experiment with online programs and technology that can be integrated into the classroom. These tools help us hit all levels of Blooms taxonomy and incorporate social justice in units of study.
